Defining Alcohol-Free Fragrance
Alcohol-free perfume refers to fragrance compositions that replace ethanol with alternative carriers like oils or water-based emulsions. While traditional scents rely on ethanol, these alternatives exist mainly as solid perfumes or perfume oils, according to a review in the journal Cosmetics.
A 2018 review in the journal Cosmetics links the growing market for these products to ethanol's flammability and ethical restrictions on its use in the Middle East. Researchers also study water-based, alcohol-free perfumes made as nanoemulsions.
The Role of Ethanol in Perfumery
Vogue Arabia reports that most perfumes today contain 60 to 90 per cent alcohol. Parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette and eau de cologne are all made in an ethanol-water solvent, according to Hong Kong Baptist University.
The main solvent in perfume is ethanol, typically more than 70 percent, mixed with water. This mixture is volatile, meaning it evaporates easily and does not leave the skin wet, while also helping to protect the perfume from microbial degradation.
Ethanol dissolves the oily, water-repelling fragrance molecules well and acts as a diffuser for the fragrance oils, helping the scent spread and project. Readers can learn more about the differences between concentrations in our guide to EDT vs EDP.
Eau de parfum typically holds 15 to 20 percent aromatic compounds, while eau de toilette typically holds 5 to 15 percent aromatic compounds, according to Wikipedia.
Characteristics of Perfume Oils
Attar is a fragrance that uses oil as its base, in contrast to the alcohol base of most perfumes, as noted by Wikipedia. The Journal of Heritage Management describes ittar as a natural, alcohol-free perfume with a niche market.
Oils and balms behave similarly on skin, as they melt in and wear close to the body, giving a more intimate scent. Vogue Arabia notes that while non-alcoholic fragrances were once seen as weaker on longevity, that view is shifting.

Solid Perfumes and Carriers
Solid perfumes come as emulsions, gels and pomades. Agarwood perfumes are seldom pure agarwood oil; they often use an alcoholic or non-alcoholic carrier such as sandalwood oil, according to TRAFFIC.
