Indonesian Oud (Borneo, Sulawesi, Papua)
Green, citrusy, woody-fresh — the young, bright face of oud.
Indonesia produces oud from three Aquilaria species — malaccensis (Borneo), filaria (Papua, Sulawesi), and microcarpa. Each source smells distinct; Borneo is the classical Indonesian character — green, woody, citrusy-fresh, vetiver-adjacent.
Where Hindi is animalic and Cambodian is sweet, Indonesian oud is vegetal. It smells like walking through a humid jungle: damp wood, green leaves, pencil shavings, bitter orange rind. Refreshing, almost 'perfumey' compared to traditional Gulf oud.
Perfect for morning and office settings — the brightness doesn't overwhelm. Works beautifully under lighter fragrances as a base; pairs well with cedar, bergamot, and pink pepper.
Papua oud (from filaria) is a rarer sub-variety with more pronounced green-aromatic character, prized among Asian collectors especially in Malaysia and Singapore.
